Description

Gisburn Forest MTB bike trails are in the Forest of Bowland, near Clitheroe, in Lancashire. Gisburn Forest consists of two mountain bike trails a Red (with black sections) and a Blue and a progressive skills loop. There are also Downhill tracks like the Orange graded Hope Line as well as specific DH Lines in the area.

There is an active volunteer community at Gisburn who are continually further developing and nurturing what's on offer.

There is a vast network of natural trails in the Yorkshire Dales just over the county border.

The 8 (Red with Black Options)

  • The red (with back sections) is an 18-kilometre trail, set overlooking the Stock Reservoir in a scenic forest setting. Designed in a figure of eight (hence the name) it consists of diverse downhill and shore sections. The trail is for experienced and intermediate riders. Some of the famous sections are Bottoms Beck, Home Baked Park Wood, the roller coaster of Hully Gully, Bigfoot slab and Swoopy and Rocky Road.
  • Long Way Down is a red descent as an alternative to the black Hully Gully. As well as offering choice it should help with winter erosion of the gulkey.

Bottoms Beck (Blue)

  • The blue trail is a shorter 9.5-kilometre route specifically for families and beginners. It has sections of green.

Hope Line Down (Orange)

  • This is a great little downhill trail that starts off with some rollers, kickers are full of fun berms, tabletops drops and then more of the same before ending on a pump track style finale

Skills loop

  • The skills loop is situated by the stone wall circle Gisburn Forest Hub. It comprises three interconnected mini loops, each progressively more challenging riding experiences. The trails are filled features and obstacles designed to test riders' abilities.

Advanced Skills Area (Replacing Leap of Faith)

  • Progressive set-up featuring tabletops, a new jump line, berms, and rollers

Other Trails

  • There is an off-piste network, with well-known wild trails including Stickman, LoaMUDageddon, Old School Yorkie, Search for Yann’s Burger, Chunk Norris, and Uncle Bulgaria.

  • Gisburn Forest Trail Builders, a group of enthusiastic riders from throughout the region has helped on a number of volunteer trail building days organised by the Forestry Commission. The group has contributed an estimated £100,000 of value to the project by hand-building over 1,500 metres of new trail and over 1100 volunteer hours (last year alone). The hand-built sections of the trail are very different in character to the machine built areas.
  • PMBA are an organisation dedicated to taking biking forward across the whole Pennines. They are a group of riders, clubs and volunteer trail building teams from across Lancashire and the North Pennines.

Other Stuff

  • If you are looking for a guide or coach in the region then check out Adam at Trail Explorer who works throughout the North West including lee Quarry and Gisburn Forest
  • The trails are part of the Ribble Valley Sports and Physical Activity Alliance (SPAA) and were made possible by a £60,000 lottery grant from Sports England. £60,000 was also contributed by the Forest of Bowland AONB, Ribble Valley Borough Council, Ribble Valley Strategic Partnership, United Utilities, and the Forestry Commission
  • In 2016 Gisburn took 3rd place in the Trail of the Year campaign for England. In 2015 they took 2nd position for the iBikeride English Trail of the Year awards. In 2014 they were awarded 1st place in 2014 for the iBikeRide English Trail of the Year and in 2013 were crowned UK Trail of the Year, taking pole position.

A great all rounder

What do you like?

There are many good points to Gisburn Forest, 1st the views, no matter where you are there is an amazing vista in front of you, 2nd the dedication of the trailbuilders for their constant work all done voluntarily. 3rd the trails, they are graded very well with every skill level covered, you can go for a little meander or a full loop, there is a skills section and is good fun 4th The Hub sell the best lemon cake in the world! Stop there and have a cuppa , a perfect end to your ride

What could be improved?

The roads getting to the forest are narrow and full of locals who know the roads and tend to drive a little faster. The weather ha ha ha when it rains in gisburn it only rains sideways! These bad points cannot be changed by human hands ;)

Would you recommend?

*Yes*

Excellent day on the bike

Having only started mountain biking 18 months ago I still class myself as a novice and know I still have a lot to learn and some of our friends said Gisburn is hard - far too technical for me to do - well challenge set!! Went to prove them wrong! and had a fab day!! I wouldnt say any more technical then done on previous trails but Gisburn had a lot of the fun factor in with it aswell. Everyone mentions Hully Gully!! I kept thinking 'what is so good about it?! but OMG!! the craziest thing I have ever seen!! and the best!! Wanted to go back and do that bit again! Trails were excellent. Yeah I might have walked a couple of times in places but I will get better! Had a fab day and will definitely be returning again

What do you like?

Hully Gully!! The best part of the day! All the sections were really good. Everything was set up and well and loved the variety

What could be improved?

Cafe and toilets could be a bit closer. No where to get changed - a lot of men getting changed in the open car park!! but not complaining too much!!

Lancashire at its best

A good ride out that gets better the more you use it, with terrain to suit everyone, and luckily is rideable in bad weather. There's something new nearly every time you ride thanks to the hard work put in by forestry workers and volunteers to maintain and build the trail. New facilities will enhance its appeal.

What do you like?

Testing and technical, good new singletrack, Hully Gully.

What could be improved?

Reasonably remote but despite this can be busy at weekends.

Awesome trail centre with loads of new stuff being built

I ride mountain bike trail centres all over the country and, although this place is essentially my local centre, I rate it way up there among the best. Masses of money seems to have been spent up on the trails and loads of man-hours building new stuff that has totally transformed the place into a centre thats worth travelling to from a-far. Why am I writing this... I like my quiet trail centre, in fact just dont some to visit as it means you will get in my way !

What do you like?

Variety on the whole trail... steep ups, good downs, logs, bumps, rocks, boardwalks, water, it just goes on and on... we are competent riders riding here all the time but at 45 years old, it takes us about 1 hour 45 to get round when we do everything... but if you havent been before probably about 2 hours so worth travelling to... try the bacon butties in the cafe too as they are awesome, generous and thick cut local pork, cant beat it after a mornings ride.

What could be improved?

6.30pm riding in summer brings out the midges so bring some cream to ward them off ! More people are visiting - and its great to see - but we're seeing an increase in the litter being dropped... loads of picking it up so no way is it really a bad point at all BUT if you do come, take your litter home with you !
