All in all, go there.. certainly the best venues for DH in south west and its been described as some of the best in the UK.

Well scaled trails mean its not downhill specific and certain trails can be ridden on just about anything.

Great passionate people

Bacon sandwiches available

Training available on site by a current world cup downhiller, you need to book in advance but hes pretty cheap for a full days tuition.

Cheap!!! @ £5 a go or £40 for a year its cheap and all money made goes back into the site...

Good Points
Stunning views and beautiful woodlabd surround both sites. The trails themselves are painstakingly build a dedicated team of experienced volunteers and no matter what your skill level there are full trails to ride. Obviously if your Steve Peat then this is a very small venue but for most of us... its a great mix of trails and a solid and supportive community. I have not met a single rider not willing to chat and have made some great friends. My favorite part is tavi woodlands though, less racer focused than most of gawton and often quieter, there are trails amongst trails and awesome little features tucked away on offshoot lines... I have been riding tavi woods for over a decade and still find new stuff when I explore.
Bad Points
Few if any bad points really, both sites are fairly easy to find but woodlands could certainly benifit from a postcode added to the website or even just gps coordinates for the carpark and better signage.

As the place is volunteer run you can sometimes find that a few of the trails are in need of repair in places, especially in December - March in the bad weather... it does always get done but it can take time.

Gawton and Tavi woodlands has to be my favourite spot to ride in the south west. There is a good variety of trails across the 2 sites with plenty of progressive features to practice and develop your skills. The uplift at Gawton is fast and efficient so you make the most out of your day. I have also recently took part in 2 of the woodland riders winter series races which were really well run there was a great supportive atmosphere and a good day was had by all.

Gawton gravity hub is an amazing place to ride and for just £40 a year its well worth it with such a variety of tracks from a very fast flowing hsd and a fast and fun proper job which is great for beginners/amateurs and if u wanna step up the game a bit you can take on supertavi and Egypt which consists of rocks, roots, tight berms and drops all over a very steep gradient which can be quite hairy (not for the faint hearted) you can also ride the rattler a selection of tables and jumps and a road gap into a lovely fast berm which will have you smiling all the way to the bottom! Last but not least the all new track megatavi!!! I can't comment on this as I haven't ridden it yet but all I can say is I've heard it is Steep!!!!!!
Get yourselfs down to gawton guys and enjoy!

Good Points
As the star ratings describe, superb venue for every level of rider. Chaz the guy you always see there doing stuff great bloke a serious credit to the venue. There are a couple of others but I don't know them too well.

Push up is no trouble if needed, tracks are brilliant awesome in the really wet weather too.. A real all weather site.. Can't reccomended it enough.. I would happily pay double for membership..
Bad Points
Need all the committee members to attend the site when members are riding, get feedback face to face rather than Fb page.. Only ever see Chaz, Andy down there.
You say anything on the Fb page it gets blown out of context and achieves nothing..

Gawton Gravity Hub is where I took a downhill bike for the first time, being female and a complete novice I was terrified of riding there. But when I turned up everyone was so friendly, the tracks were so much fun and really challenged me. I walked the track first to get a feel of it then decided to commit and bomb it down as quick as possible and managed proper job at the same speed as my mate who's been riding for years! I've been here a few times now as it's local to me and it just keeps getting better and better.
Tavi woodlands over the road was super fun for the afternoon ride, loads of line choice, great features and jumps to progress on.
Definitely not for beginners who aren't looking to scare the bejeezus out of themselves!

For one of the best riding areas in the uk, venture down to Devon! Make a weekend of it, ride both sites, get the beers in and leave with a smile on your face. Come and ride Gawton and Tavistock woodlands ( but make sure to buy a day pass! ) .

As you may be able to tell I am a little biased - but it's all worth it ;)

Good Points
Both Tavistock woodlands and Gawton gravity hub cater for all ages and abilities. Gawton is a great, well served riding area ranging from the beginners favourite, HSD and the mental new Megatavi course. Efficient uplift service from Flyup who also serve the Forest Of Dean site and skills coaching sessions from World Cup racer Jay Williamson. And Tavistock woodlands is a great site for those new to the sport with a variety of jump features and different short courses. I have been involved with the riding scene around the Tavistock area now for around 16 years and can honestly say that it is one of the most well served towns in the uk for cycling. Great xc loops on dartmoor, purpose built dirt jumps in the town centre and a cool pump track at the Gawton site.
Bad Points
Every site has the same issue - although it would be great to have perfectly manicured 'whistler-esque' trails, both sites are maintained by volunteers so maintenance does suffer some times, but with better weather comes extensive trail work. Woodland riders run one of the best, most fun and affordable mini race series which takes it's toll but we will keep doing it!

Good Points
Long runs but not so long your dying out your ass, easy begginer trails although this is a dh site so don't expect xc it's still a red! Jumps starting from tables to big road gaps! Plenty to challenge even the best riders with some tracks that floe and tracks that have your brain working overtime just to stay on your bike, overall tracks and uplift for the price you pay is more than reasonable
Bad Points
This place is voluntary based so don't come during the week expecting to buy a bacon butty as you won't however toilets are always open!

Good Points
Track by Track:
HSD: It stands for high speed descent and doesn't disappoint! First track I ever rode here, and one I still use as a warm up each time. This is a fast, flowing descent that can be ridden on any bike. The quicker you go the better it gets! Each transition can be pumped or popped to link it together and chasing your mates down it is great fun.

Proper Job: The newest of the four tracks at Gawton. It opened last year and subsequently held the South West Championships. Conceived as a stepping stone between the red HSD and the two black runs it is easy to see why it has become instantly and unanimously popular. it features the same fast flowing blueprint set up by HSD but combines it with big, bike park style turns, small jumps and drops and fiendish rock gardens. A fantastic adrenaline fuelled ride from the opening slalom to the snaking switchback finale.

Egypt: In a word, technical. What awaits you from the off is a steep rooty nightmare that will require some serious skills to clean effectively. Along the way you'll encounter flat sections where keeping speed is essential, a large, multiple line choice rock garden and tight, steep, alpine style switchbacks. As hard as it is, the rewarding feeling at the end is unbeatable.

Super Tavi: A perfect combination of all the above. Fast flowing sections combine with technical switchbacks to form the most challenging of all the tracks. The two large road gaps may look intimidating, but are avoidable, and it's well worth testing yourself against the rest of the track. Also, Woodland Riders have a timing system in place so you can test yourself against pros such as Gee Atherton and Aaron Gwin!

So there you have it, four varied and exciting tracks, downhill perfection!
Bad Points
The punishment for all the lovely downtime is an unfortunately long push up. How ever, recently a new, surfaced , smooth push up has been installed to make it a bit easier and an uplift has started running for those that wish. It is a bout a twenty minute walk and I wouldn't expect to get more than 10 full runs in in a day.

The car park also has some cafe and changing facilities but they have never been open when I go so I can't comment on them
