Description

Chopwell Woods mountain bike trails are near Gateshead, South of Newcastle in the North of England. There is a short red, a black as well as some off-piste. There is also Chopwell pump track not too far away.

Like this?

It's quite close to Hamsterley so as Chopwell is short it could be worth combining this with your trip or maybe also exploring some of the unmarked trails at Chopwell.

The Powerline (Red)

  • The Powerline is a short 4km red (low end of grading scale) graded fast technical XC trail.
  • The trail head is at the main car park and finished near the River Derwent. It's easy to find you follow the powerlines (hence the name).

Black Trail - Article 50

  • The trail is a black (low end of scale) graded unsurfaced trail.

Off Piste Trails

  • There are some off-piste unsanctioned and non way-marked trail network in the area.

Chopwell Pump Track

  • These two asphalt Velosolutions Pump Tracks can be found in Chopwell Park. The smaller track is for kids and is 43 meters long, with 3 berms and 8 rollers. The larger track is 240 meters long and has more challenging terrain, with 10 bermed corners and 39 roller jumps.
  • The track opened in 2020 and is the only symmetrical track in the UK, which means two riders can be on track simultaneously for exciting head-to- head racing. Hence has the fame to be used in International competitions.

What do you like?

Whilst there are only two official, maintained trails there are a multitude of bridleways to take advantage of if you know where to look, or wrangle a regular for a guided tour. A good mix trails from all weather surface to natural mud fest, flat, flow and steel technical sections. Small, but a good amount of gradients mean a couple of thousand feet climbing in 8 miles over an hour, and never too far away from the carpark. Also a rather excellent group of people on a Thursday night for regular night rides if you have lights.

What could be improved?

No toilets or other facilities, but everyone poops before the leave the house, right? Plenty of shops and garages on the way for for and drink, though

*Yes*

Red and black trail and everything in between of you are willing to look. Blue trail and fireroads for family, stuff Danny Hart trained on for mentalists

What could be improved?

Could do with some toilets or something (or use a tree)

Local woods

Chopwell is my local trails being from Consett and I ride there regularly. I think it's a great place to learn skills and gain confidence as nothing is too big or scary. Saying that I'm not the biggest fan of the power line and the new black route as they both are too flat to really throw down on a long travel bike. I usually hit the power line as a warm up before venturing over to the other side of the woods near Lintzford. There's the big step up, steep trails with some pretty Gnar exposure and some rad little lines worth shredding. The main complaint my riding group has is the lack of bigger tables and trail features but you can't have everything.

What do you like?

Close to home and within riding distance. Mellow features which help build confidence. Nice regular crowd Free parking

What could be improved?

No facilities Not too much variety in the signposted trails. Expected a bit more downhill on a trail noted as black rating

Would you recommend?

*Yes*
