Nearby is also a set of sister downhill trails in Stile Cop known as Stile Cop Downhill (just off Stile Cop road).

Follow the Dog (Red)

  • Follow the Dog at Cannock Chase is a red graded 6.8 miles (10.9km) intermediate mountain bike trail aimed at competent mountain bikers. This trail was designed and built by Chase Trails in 2005.
  • Highlights include 'Twist and Shout', 'High Voltage', 'Son of Chainslapper', and 'Snakes 'n' Adders'.
  • The trail consists of flowing singletrack, great views, climbs, fun descents, boardwalks, rollers, jumps, drop offs, berms, step ups, step downs and rock gardens.
  • There are a number of optional black sections on this trail. For example 'The Head Banger'is a short black-graded section. It is near the start of Let Loose, with two boardwalks, a rock qualifier, and technically challenging rock garden.

The Monkey Trail (Red with Black Options)

  • The Monkey Trail joins the Follow the Dog half way round. It's a red graded trail but this time it’s a more technically challenging and demanding trail than Follow the Dog. It is 7.4 miles long but put together with the Follow the Dog it is just over 14 miles (22.6km) long and includes bigger climbs, more technical descents and optional black graded lines.
  • The trail launched in 2010 is intended for the experienced and technically competent rider.  Some of the renowned sections to look out for are Monkey's Uncle, Upper and Lower Cliff, Rainbow Valley, Over the Rainbow, Deerskull, Pot of Gold and Roller Coaster.
  • In 2023 a new section between Deer Skull and The Original Monkey opened called 'Old Father Time'. The section has been chosen as a memorial to Martin one of the Chase Trails volunteers who passed away in 2020.
  • The terrain is loose stones, roots, mud, steep climbs, technical descents, flowing singletrack, large berms, step ups, step downs, rock gardens, boardwalks, rollers, jumps and drop offs.
  • There is also a 1km long descent on the Monkey Trail called the Five Ways Descent.
  • The black sections are optional but once on them include large and unavoidable rocks and rock gardens.

Fairoak Trail - Green

  • There is also a Green graded trail suitable for families and beginners called The Fairoak Trail which is 2.5 miles(4km) long. There is one gentle climb back to the Forest centre. Surface is mostly smooth.

Perry's Trail - Blue

  • Perry's Trail is a blue graded 2.7m (4.3km) route built in 2021. The surface is smooth with some loose stone and muddy areas. Expect flowing singletrack, gentle berms, rollers, gradual climbs and rollable rock gardens. The highlight is a fun, fast, flowing descent. There are also three optional red sections to push your skills.

Stile Cop Downhill

  • A number of red and black graded short downhill runs making good use of the 65-metre hill. All of the runs end in the same place at the bottom of the hill. There is no uplift service but it is only approximately 10 mins to push up. The site is free to ride. NB This is a nearby but different site (see the separate listing).

Groups and Clubs

The XC trails are managed in partnership with Forestry England by Chase Trails. Chase Trails also managed Stile Cop downhill until 2016 when the Racers Guild team took over.

Surprise

Having visited Cannock Chase for the first time today I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised with the quality of the trails and the varying terrain. Most of the downhill sections were excellent and left a big grin on my face and that of my mate that was with me. The climbs were most surprising quite steep and technical in places. The facilities at cannock are great very cheap to park just £3.00 for the whole day. All in all a very enjoyable day out I will definitely be back as it is quite local for me. The only complaint I would have is about the people who use the trail and leave there litter strewn across the forest floor not nice when there are people who don't really get a lot of recognition for looking after the trails you ride and keeping them in the condition they are in maybe these people who drop there rubbish should consider this and the environment around them and put there rubbish in there pocket or bag and dispose of it properly so other peoples enjoyment of the trail is not marred.

cannock

Had fun at Cannock, will visit again. Follow the dog on its own was not worthy of a Red classification in my opinion, nothing challenging really, more of a novice flowing XC trail. But the Monkey trail is a brilliant intermediate extension, with the black sections adding much fun. Worth going for the monkey trail alone. Found the Follow the dog trail a bit overcrowded (particularly worrying as it is only march), got stuck behind people who plain refused to move out the way when asked politely. You could easily ride here on a hard tail, suspension is not really essential. Some friendly locals showed us some diversions down unofficial trails on our second loop. These were good tree root strewn trails and worth riding. Trails were well looked after and the facilities were good.

What do you like?

Monkey trail fun Good fun non official trails Well looked after (particularly after all the wet weather) Good flow to all trails

What could be improved?

Follow the dog not really challenging for a red. A little busy

Cannock Chase

We drove up from Bristol for a few hours and were a bit surprised how much fun we had at Cannock. I think we both underestimated it a little - although I'm still carrying a lot of excess flab from Christmas. Anyway, we both left well-pleased with the ride. It's great fun for a novice/intermediate rider. Some great flowing sections and a few significant challenges here and there on the second trail (Monkey). We went in mid-Feb and the trail was pretty quiet and in great condition considering recent weather, but can imagine it gets busy in the summer, given the location. All-weather trail - but nice to see some mud and rooty sections! Finally, the centre is great, too, with cafe/toilets and shop with pretty much all you'd need. Def worth a visit - do a couple of laps to make a day of it!

What do you like?

Good % singletrack and good flow throughout Some surprisingly decent technical challenges - esp on Monkey All weather

What could be improved?

Can imagine it gets busy in spring/summer Pretty flat if you're used to Wales (but they've done a brilliant job considering location!)

*Yes*

Chase Trails Dog & Monkey

Cannock Chase is my local riding spot, every time I go it leaves me with a grin on my face!

What do you like?

If you put the two trails - Monkey and Dog together its a good distance to ride. Some challenging rock gardens, Warewolf drop etc. Some good lung busting hill climbs & technical hill climbs on the Monkey. Nice downhill sections on the Monkey - Upper and Lower Cliff. Pure good fun! Loads of off the beat single tracks to explore.

What could be improved?

It can get a bit battered during the winter leaving a lot of repair work. So it always helps if riders contribute towards maintaining the routes. Even if you just pay £15 to become a member for the year. Every little helps!
