BikePark Wales has approximately 13 blues, 16 reds, 14 blacks, 4 pro-lines,  2 greens, and a pump track.

There is an uplift and a 5km single-track ride-up option that takes around 30 minutes. BikePark Wales has 1750 vertical meters descending from the summit of Mynydd Gethin (which is at 491 meters in height).

Trail System Overview

BikePark Wales offers an extensive and diverse network of mountain biking trails, catering to riders of all skill levels and preferences. As the UK's largest mountain bike destination, it combines elements of a trail centre, downhill venue, and freeride park into one comprehensive experience. The trails are categorized and graded to help riders choose routes that match their abilities and desired riding style.

Trail Types:

  1. Flow Trails: Designed for smooth, fluid riding with berms, rollers, and jumps. These are great for building confidence and speed.
  2. Technical Trails: Feature more challenging terrain with obstacles like rocks, roots, and drops, requiring advanced bike handling skills.
  3. Blend Trails: Combine elements of both flow and technical trails for a varied riding experience.
  4. Plus Trails: A special category that includes more challenging "bikepark" and freeride-style features. These trails are marked with a Plus logo and may include gap jumps, larger drop-offs, and timber Northshore features.

Color Grading System:

Trails are graded by colour to indicate difficulty level:

  • Green: Beginner-friendly
  • Blue: Intermediate
  • Red: Advanced
  • Black: Expert
  • Purple: Pro-level

Quarry Skills Area

The Quarry Skills Area, located near the start of the popular Popty Ping trail, offers a comprehensive range of features including:

  • Graded drops and jumps
  • Parallel gap and table jump lines for confidence-building
  • Rollers, skinnies, and berms
  • A unique "Steeps" zone with technical bedrock rolls and drops

What sets this skill area apart is its incorporation of natural bedrock features. The area even includes a challenging pro-line for advanced riders seeking to push their limits.

Pump Track

  • BikePark Wales also has a small pump track.

Skill Features

  • Session-able step up jump features to complement the Quarry Skills Area: Air470 and Dragons Back

Adaptive MTB

  • BikePark Wales now offers an Adaptive Bike Pass with mapped access to approved trails, tailored for adaptive bikes like the Bowhead Reach. Support riders go free, and a trail map is provided on arrival.

Beginners

  • Bike Park Wales are offering a Beginner Uplift Experience for discovering the the Green and Blue tracks. It’s a great option for riders who have a bit of off-road cycling experience and want to take the next step. They provide all the protective equipment and a premium hardtail bike.

Other Stuff

  • They are E-MTB friendly with a free to use charging station you can book.
  • They also have a Free AXS battery charging and loaner batteries available! You can bring your dead batteries to charge and  take out one of our spares.
  • Coaching sessions available on the website
  • There is a classroom to help guide beginners with an intro.
  • In addition to the main cafe at the main entrance there is a snack bar with a selection of hot and cold drinks as well as some snacks at the summit on weekends so you don't have to stop busting out the laps to keep you going whilst on the hill
  • In both 2023 and 2024, BikePark Wales took 1st place in the iBikeRide UK Trail and Bike Park of the Year awards.

Future Plans

  • In June 2024 permission was approved that could see BikePark Wales double in size over the next few years. To give a taste of the plans.
  • We will see more graded trails through from another green, to reds, blacks and jump lines.

    • Another green

    • A cool blue flow trail will link up the middle of the park to the tunnel

    • The popular Boomslang that just sort of stops before the bottom with a firewood road choice of back up or down will have a new bottom section to complete the ride.

    • There will be a big top-to-bottom red tech trail from the south start area down to the uplift.

    • For jump trails, we will see the development of progressive tracks to fill in the progression gaps between the likes of Popty Ping (blue flow trail) to the A470 (red flow trail) (which today is a big leap in ability between the two).
    • We will also see more progression at the top end going from red to black in jumps
    •  We will see the skills area in the disused quarry at the top of the park near Potty Ping. Expect beginner rollers, jumps, drop-offs, tech climbs, rock rolls, drop-ins and pro-line features.

    • A proper e-bike loop consisting of 5 or 6 full steep tech climbs and steep tech downs.

  • In August 2024 they announced: they had signed a new lease with Natural Resources Wales. This means they can extend their trail network significantly, add accommodation to the overall offering and rewild the mountain to its original natural ancient forest state. The plan includes:
    • Adding new trails: 9 climbing trails, 27 downhill trails, 7 linking trails, and 2 new skills areas
    • Expanding the visitor area and car park
    • Introducing sustainable accommodation options like glamping pods and chalets
    • Implementing a rewilding initiative to promote biodiversity and forest resilience

A must do...soon!

Bikepark wales is probably my new favourite day of riding to date. Sadly due to the time we arrived we didn't get to try all the runs but the ones we did were excellent. So much flow, tons of berms and just so much fun. We didn't have uplift passes but you're pretty much guaranteed a ride on every one except the one straight after lunch. Everyone says to start with green but i really wouldn't bother. Norkle which you ride the bottom of to the uplift is a good taster of what you will find on the blue. The cafe here is brilliant but sadly we didn't get to try the burgers as they weren't on sale until 6pm. There is a good travelodge you can stay in about 30 seconds away, with a tasty chinese buffet for after the long day of sitting on an uplift.... Bikepark wales really is a must do for everyone

Awesome trail centre on any bike

Great centre, only thing that spoils it is the abundance of Orange 5's :-)

What do you like?

Top café / shop set-up Awesome progressive trails Fast, floaty blues Steeper, technical reds Damn hard and rocky blacks! Even the XC route isn't too tough to the top, the push up is even easier. The trail centre that has it all, if it had a chairlift I'd move in.

What could be improved?

Lack of uplift space means you have to book 3 months in advance Welsh weather - 4 seasons in 1 run isn't rare (Yes, I even got snowed on in the woods!)

Proper Job!

I called in on my way back from Devon on a week day. Its was quiet but the uplift was full. I managed to ride up (about 30mins) and do 6 runs down and then was too knackered to ride up again. I did once from each of the 5 start points (2 black, 1 red and 2 blue) and did the major line choice each time - on the 6th run I went down the blue with a big red option and took that. I didnt do everything, there are more extra lines I could have tried but did most of it. However it is expanding all the time so should also be fresh stuff to try. Good showers afterwards, good parking.

What do you like?

Lots of variety and some line choice. Natural feel especially on the blacks. Ride up isnt too bad

What could be improved?

Its too far away from me for a day trip. Cafe a bit pricy for a northerner.

Yes

Our home Bike Park

What do you like?

BikePark Wales is a jewel in the Valleys, we helped construst many of the trails so maybe a bit biased bit there is a lot of variety here, I you are a beginner or hard core rider there is plenty to keep you entertained. The Trail centre is superb, great shop and cafe lots of choice and the staff are very friendly and helpful when required. More trails are planned which we will assist in contructing in due course. Yes BDC is being held here next year which is fantatic news This BikePark is going to get better and better so keep and eye on it. Follow us on Twitter @AberdareMTBclub

What could be improved?

Limited toilet facilities, only one dump house which can be problematic at bust times for lads. No wifi to upload vids/pics to social mediabut this is due to the centre not having broadband and reliant on 3G.

Would you recommend?

Yes

BikePark Wales - Respect!

BikePark Wales is truly an amazing centre. I started on the Blues and they are fast, flowing, confidence building and it's hard not to take air. There is a definite Rowan Sorrell site and some of it is reminiscent of the Verderers in the Forest of Dean (in a good way mind) although don't confuse a Blue downhill with a Blue XC trail as it's a step up on a Downhill. The reds which are rockier, steepier, with drops and generally more technical and gnarlier. All still absolutely fine on an All Mountain bike. The black is more extreme and really rocky but tons of fun. The neat thing is you can mix and match. So start on a blue and add a red section option on the way down or do a whole red run end to end. The best bit is the runs are a mile plus so they feel long and great value and that means maximum fun. I did get quite a bit of arm pump but you get a lot of DH riding in for each uplift. Be nice though if the uplift ran a bit faster but all in all the facilities are really good and the staff really friendly. The cafe is top notch biker grub and the Bike Shop well stocked. Bike Wash does what it says on the tin and the trails rock. I've also on one occasion done the ride uphill and the XC trail up is a lovely trail and well worth doing. It ends at the top with the DH runs so you can choose whatever is your fancy to descend. It's also not that far from the Black Mountain Cycle Centre which have combined in the same weekend. I'm hooked and on my 4th trip already.

What do you like?

-Flowing and progressive -Lots of choice and long runs -Great facilities and vibe

What could be improved?

- Uplift can be quite a wait at times. - Car park can be a bit full if you get there late morning

Would you recommend?

Yes
