Something for all abilities and enough trail for big days out or short blasts.
Nothing bad to say, I am a local rider and never get bored. Great to meet so many that have to travel from across the UK and abroad. Most bike tests visit Afan at some point as it allows them to assess so trail variety.
What do you like?
Variety, miles of trail, plenty of off piste official and unofficial to test the brave. I've ridden these trails for 40 yrs and every trail rideable in any conditions . The original routes have stood the test of time and the new additions have enhanced Afan. One main attribute is that each trail has a progression in difficulty even though all are mostly Red graded. Penhydd is ideal for building confidence and stamina, build up to Y Wal which is a lot more technical and sapping then move up to Whites and Blade which is where the adrenaline steps up a level and it'll take a few attempts to clean the Whites climb for even yhe more experienced.
What could be improved?
In my mind I've never had a bad ride in Afan, there's certainly something special in the valley, a tranquility and beauty that offsets any bad weather. If you're a serious mountain biker or a part time novice there is something all. I think the more visitors that can be attracted the stronger the infrastructure will be. I meet lots of people at Afan Lodge hotel and never here a bad word. Others prefer the Bryn Bettws lodges all happy customers. Afan is well supported with 2 centres with Local bike shops for bike sales/ repairs and hire.
The only very big negative could be the potential impact of wind farm expansion which is going to tear through the Penhydd trail and is a massive mistake. The locality has already tolerated a vast expanse of wind arm on the surrounding hills and that should be enough- look elsewhere.
