Description

The Trossachs is a discrete area East of Loch Lomond, between Aberfoyle and Callander. It is a great area for natural mountain biking. The area is part of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park which combines two iconic but separate areas. Glen Branter is part of the Loch Lomond area to the West. It's close by to Callander MTB Trails and Aberfoyle Bike Park.

Like this?

The Glen Finglas loop is one of the types of MTB riding - tough climbs and remote Highland country. Here you have some classic push/carrys and descents, such as Ben Lomond, Ben Venue West Highland Way, Rob Roy Way. The other type of trails out here is the natural trails in the forest, from easy to extreme. You can see some examples on the Bike Trossachs site including some extreme videos including Joe Barnes on Ben A'an and Stu Thompson on one of the unmapped trails.

As far as MTB web resources out there this was very limited until the new Bike Trossachs site came along. It is still new and the trail maps are not yet in but keep checking back.

This is what we have been able to find out about the area and the routes:

Glen Finglas Loop (The Mell)

  • A demanding 24 km ungraded trail around Glen Finglas starting at Brig O' Turk. You can find a trail map here and there is a good description of it on the Trail Scotland site here.

Glenbranter Forest Route - Argyll Forest Park.

For these routes, you can get more info and start points from the Forestry commission site here.

  • Glenbranter Cycle Splashc is a red graded 9km MTB loop that is varied in terrain and challenges. It's known to be a demanding and muddy XC trail.
  • Loch Eck Shore Cycle Trail is a 14.5km Blue more moderate route.
  • There is also Green family friendly cycle routes like the 13km Glenshellish loop.

Other Useful Sites

  • DMBins have a couple of route cards for the area around Aberfoyle (a green route and a blue with red sections route).
  • A good resource for trails and routes covering the road and off road is the Incallander site here (although they are mostly fairly easy routes).

Other Stuff:

  • Check out the attachments tab for some routes and route cards.
  • A kids skills loop at Mainsfarm wigwams, Thornhill opens in Easter.
  • A further proposal is out there to build a Bike Park at Rabbit Hill in Aberfoyle. The project is being managed by a company called Collective Training. The aim is a progressive park (Blue, Red and Orange graded).
  • Bike Trossachs is the main MTB organisations in this region. They are a reasonably new voluntary group with the aim of developing and promoting mountain biking in the Trossachs area.
  • Big thanks and credit from Sandy Slater at Wild Biking Scotland for lots of insight on the Trossachs area.
