Description

The Kirroughtree mountain bike trail centre is just east of Newton Stewart in Galloway Forest Park in Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland.

Like this?

It is part of the 7Stanes network of MTB trails and is just around the corner from its sister trail Glentrool in the same forest. Kirroughtree is most famous for the technically challenging McMoab's huge slabs but it's a big forest (we are talking 300 square miles of the forest) so unsurprisingly we are talking lots of amazing trails with something for all abilities and tastes.

There is a Green, a Blue, a Red, and a Black trail and if that isn't enough there is a Taster Loop and a Skills Area too.

Bargaly Wood (Green)

  • Bargaly Wood is a green graded family-friendly 6km long trail. This is a relaxed ride along forest trails, farm tracks, and quiet public roads.

Larg Hill (Blue)

  • Larg Hill is a 10km (14km if you throw in the optional Doon Hill extension) blue graded trail. It is great for novices, confident children, and families. With 50% swooping twisty singletrack, rocky sections, and a few small rock drops peppered along the way it's a great trail. If you aren't sure then start with the Blue Taster Loop and you will get a good feel for what to expect.

Twister (Red)

  • The Twister is a red-graded 17km technically challenging trail. Being on 80% singletrack and packed full of technical features it is a confident mountain biker's dream come true. We are talking lots of singletrack, rock steps, a granite boulder, rock slab climbs (and descents), drop-offs, and flowing downhill tracks (the XC style variety). It has a few black graded options thrown in too and there is also the option to significantly extend your ride and join the 14km black graded Black Craigs loop at the midway point.

Black Craig's (Black)

  • Black Craig's is a 14km (31km if including the Red Twister) black graded trail of near legend. The highlight is McMoab's huge slabs.
  • With 75% singletrack, rocky technical features like rock step up's, the as mentioned huge McMoab granite slabs, steep climbs, fast-flowing descents (with serious drop-offs), raised timber sections, and ridges of exposed granite there is a lot on offer here. You start the trail on the red Twister and its halfway point to get to Black Craig's.

Skills Area (Blue, Red, and Black Options)

  • Following the track to the main trails for a couple of hundred metres you hit the Skills Area. You have a great choice of either blue, red, or black-graded short runs. It gives you an idea of what you can expect from the grades on the main trails as well as offering a fantastic progressive skills development opportunity.

What a trail!

What do you like?

A great trail centre! The blue, red and black loops are all amazing and well maintained! The black in particular is a really long trail with some pretty big climbs and technical sections, McMoab being a great challenge however you don't want to try it in the wet! And the downhills are long and fast, With a new visitor centre now open year round the facilities are excellent! Overall a great couple days of riding can be done here!

What could be improved?

None I can think of

First trip to Scotland

What do you like?

I didnt research to much as i like to just try new trails and see for myself, first ride and we picked Kerroughtree. We started off doing the red twister then half way round you ve got to make a decision wether to just finish the red twister or add on the Black Craigs which adds around 8-9 km but i can assure you its well worth it. Not just for the Mc moab but what happens after is a lung busting ride up Heartbreak hill rewarded by what seems like mile after mile of slightly down hill twisting, technical rolling singletrack, i absolutely loved it i cant wait to go back.

What could be improved?

None

What do you like?

so much to trail to ride down at Kirrie, the black is a leg/lung buster. The red is technical in places but rewarding, and then there is the unofficial extended Red route that we locals use... over all Kirrie is a brill day out for all the family. and loads of off Piste trails there :-)

What could be improved?

the Diversions in place at the moment cut a fair bit of the trails out..

What do you like?

Rewarding XC trail when you combine the Red and Black it's probably one of the toughest days out at a trail centre short of doing constant laps of Laggan on an 80mm Hardtail. Great mix of terrain types, and McMoab is just amazing as is the view from the top of the Black (you have to work for it)

What could be improved?

Rode it after a month and a half off the bike due to injury, was cramping all the way back up the road!

Kirroughtree 7stanes

What do you like?

In my opinion best 7stane. Red route trail challenging. Even on the wettest day you are relatively dry. Well thought out and natural. If you are expecting a trail that is as smooth as a motorway this is not the trail for you. The local bike shop is not only helpful but so so friendly.

What could be improved?

After over a year of diversions, the regulars can see light at the end of the tunnel. New visitor center is opening in the next few weeks.

Would you recommend?

*Yes*
