Perfect trails for young children to progress on.
Our 6 year old and 4 year old twins love the blue trail here.
It's all smooth singletrack but there's lots of nice berms and rollers that they love.
The climbs are also easily doable on their small singlespeed children's bikes.
If you go fast it's also fun for Mum's and Dad's.
Can't comment on the facilities as we didn't use them due to the pandemic but it looked well equipped from the outside.
What do you like?
Fast and smooth and great for families to progress on.
What could be improved?
Car park can get really busy so arrive early (Trails are still quiet though)
hicks lodge is a small trail center with a nice cafe and a few different loops aimed more for beginners. the blue route is a fun loop with some fast berms and rollers. good for some fitness training. there is no big features here but you can have alot of fun and get a bit of air off the rollers!
What do you like?
fast and fun as you can make it
great cafe
very friendly place
Great fun - another reviewer said its like a drawn out pump track, which is a pretty good description. It is good fun and worth doing it fast. If you want a decent workout, go round twice. Some of the jumps are worth throwing the bike over if you're not usually confident (I'm not!). And the berms are actually good for training, again, I'm not that technical a rider, so find it helpful. A great facility for families and novices - rarely crowded, worth supporting.
Some fun features along the way. Lots of berms scattered along but I found some of them to be quite tight to get out of so a bit akward. Loads of random rollers along the way to try and jump. The final descent is really quick to get back to the top off so worth a few rides before you head back
What do you like?
Good facilities. Fun trail with lots of berms and a few jumps
We love hicks lodge, especially as its only 10 minutes away. Whether its a nice family afternoon with our two children (5 & 10 years) on the family trail and around the lake or a late night riding session on a Thursday night when the cafes open till 8.
The Shell brook trail is ideal to get into mountain biking and my son loves it. I wouldn't recommend tag alongs, small children or non mountain bikes on it as some sections would be difficult.
The scenery and woodlands are great and maturing all the time and as has been said you have to try the cakes out after a hard ride, it would be rude not to......
Thursday nights are great,a completely different experience doing the trail at night, dont worry as theres always lots of people on the trail with you..
What do you like?
single track Shell brook trail, decent length family trail and a good playground for the kids while you have a proper cup of tea or coffee
Very family friendly
fab café
Good clean facilities (toilets etc)
What could be improved?
Just a small note to watch the gravel on the family trail as little ones might find it a bit difficult on downhill sections.
