Description

Hadleigh Park mountain bike trail centre is based in Hadleigh Country Park in Essex, England. Famed for being the home of the 2012 mountain bike Olympic Games, it has been converted as part of the Olympic Legacy and is open and can be ridden by the public (no need to book in advance). Since the games many of the trails are described in the reviews section as being in poor upkeep or closed, so please check the reviews and socials before visiting.

Like this?

There is a red trail (with black options) which was the Olympic course as well as a blue, green and all-ability trail. There is also a pump track and a skills area.

Olympic Mountain Bike Course (Red with Black sections)

  • Since the games they have retained and developed the 2012 Olympic mountain bike course. It's open to everyone and is 5km long made from crushed sandstone. There are both technical up-hills and descents. Some are quite steep, many rock gardens, a northshore section and tight berms.

  • The majority of the Olympic mountain bike course is classified as red apart from 6 black features including the Triple Trouble, Deanes Drop, Leap of Faith, Oak Tree, North Shore Gap Jump and the Final Descent sections.

Blue Trail

  • The Blue trail at Hadleigh Park is 4km long and for novices. The red and the blue trail share many of the same sections. The blue which is for novices is more flowing and features berms, switchbacks and a dual slalom section.

Multi-User trail (Green)

  • The green trail is a multi-use trail. Pedestrians have priority so keep aware. It surrounds the northern perimeter of the park and bisects the marsh reaching as far as Benfleet station to the west and Hadleigh castle to the east. It is approximately 9km and is more accessible to families but does contain some steep climbs and decent.

All Ability Trail

  • The All Ability trail is 1.3km long and has a gradient of less than 12:1 so it is more suitable for people with physical disabilities. The all-ability trail takes in views of the Olympic Mountain bike trail, Hadleigh Castle, the country park and the Thames Estuary.

Pump Track and Skills area

  • There is a small pump track as well as a skills area with different progressively sized drops, rocky sections and rollers / jumps.

Club and Groups

The Hub

  • The Hub is what the Visitors Centre is called. Core to the adaptation and as part of the community consultation was to make this more of a community hub to be a Gateway for all the outdoor activities on offer here at Hadleigh be it cycling or walking etc. It features a cafe, rangers offices, children's play area, toilets, changing rooms, community room, bike hire and shop.

Other Stuff

  • Since London 2012, Essex County Council, along with Active Essex, have been developing Hadleigh Park into a sporting venue as part of the Olympic legacy.
  • Architrail trail builders converted the Olympic track to make it a defined trail centre accessible to the general public.

The usual silence and lack of care from the Council

It could be so good if the council actually cared, instead they are completly silent on the matter. The trails are still used but they have fallen into such a state they are becoming almost unrideable in areas.... maybe the is the councils plan.... it certainly feels like they dont care and want to shut the place down, its a real shame.

They should have contracted this out to a industry specific company with knowledge and experieince in trail building and maintenance but nothing. We have heard a maintenance company were put in place, if this is the case they must have either not started, or have taken the money and ran as nothing has been touched in years.

All we can keep doing is raising the issue and maybe (although we all won't hold our collective breaths), the council will do the right thing and get an experienced trail maintenance/building company and bring the bike park up to a good standard so we can all enjoy the trails once again

What do you like?

Nothing currently, its an utter mess

What could be improved?

All features and trails, every part of it

Would you recommend?

no

Well past it's prime, shame the shop is so good.

Used to be a great place to ride.  If you're thinking about it now, don't do it.  Trails are in awful condition and well past their prime with no maintenance in the last few years.  Features closed and still closed with no sign of being worked in or reopened.  You get people walking on the trails, sign posts are non existent so make sure you have a good sense of direction, all in all a country park now, not a top MTB venue.

What do you like?

Great place for kids to learn to ride with Hadleigh Park Cycles, mechanics and staff are great in there too, a family picnic but, terrible for an actual mountain bike ride.

Bike repairs spot on, learning to ride and coaching there is great.

So much potential- not being realised.

Poor! Trail surface dangerous, some features been shut for too long. No consultation to users.

What do you like?

The views. Sadly a lot of the features that have been closed

What could be improved?

Total management change and an MTB focussed team running it as a going concern

Please get this place sorted again !

Such a pity for the history of the 2012 Olympic Games

What do you like?

It’s relatively close to go and ride there from Chelmsford.

Bike shop on site

There’s a gnarly hill to test your FTP - about the only decent bit left on it !

What could be improved?

The repair and maintenance of the site…

Would you recommend?

yes

Hadleigh lament…

This was an amazing opportunity f oh r MTBers in/around Essex, but has sadly been left to rot!

After 2012 all we heard across many sports was the ‘Olympic Legacy’… where has that gone?…

it had everything going for it, but now needs serious cash injection to get it back on its feet…

What do you like?

I like/d the technical difficulty of the features.

To be able to ride an Olympic class course.

What could be improved?

Everything!

no
