Description

Philips Park MTB trails are based in Greater Manchester. There are two short Red loops in Philips Park that also connect onto a neighbouring short Blue trail in Waterdale.

Like this?

Philips Park (Red)

  • The Red trail is 3.5 km long, starts at the car park, and has sweeping berms, lots of jumps, table tops, and tricky ascents and descents. It is two loops in a figure of eight. The North Wood loop is ridden in an anti-clockwise direction and the South Wood loop is ridden in a clockwise direction.

Waterdale (Blue)

  • A 3km Blue graded purpose-built singletrack in a flowing woodland area suitable for beginners and novices. There is a link from the Philips Park trail connecting it to Waterdale.

Other Stuff

  • The £100,000 project was funded through a woodland improvement grant from the Forestry Commission. It was built purposely to link to the one built previously by the Forestry Commission on the adjacent Waterdale site and connect to a wider network of trails in the Irwell Valley.
  • Philips Park is one of the largest parks in Greater Manchester.

Dodge the Dogs

Two great red-graded trails with a focus on fast flow and jumps, looked after by a mix of volunteers and local council.  Sections of the south trail was built with the Farmer Johns team.  There are also some 'unofficial' trails in a separate area and some much less fun blue trails in the valley.

What do you like?

Reasonably well maintained, fast, fun trails with a steep but paved uphill path in between.  Good for all skill levels as the largest features are avoidable and all others are rollable.

What could be improved?

Dogs and walkers, while there are a few tiny signposts saying that the trails are bike only there are often dogs and walkers wandering on the trails.  Fortunately this is usually on the slower sections but I have crashed dodging dogs.

Would you recommend?

yes

Great fun and free

Two nice red trails and some OK blues in the park below. These are free, volunteer maintained trails so not a full trail center but a lot of fun.

What do you like?

Easy to get to from the M60, two nice flow trails with some decent jumps.

What could be improved?

Not a huge amount of variety

yes

Good local facility

It's a great local facilty for those living in the Manchester / Bury / local area, with ample parking. The Park itself (not to be confused with the Phillips Park in Eastland) consists of a blue xc circuits and two red decent trails from the car park. The red trails are well built with some nice features in. I tend to start from the car park, descend on the one of the reds, climb back up the central fire road and descend down the other red - a nice little figure of 8. I think it would be disingenuous to compare this with somewhere like Gisburn or Llandegla. Don't be put off by the relatively low rating, it's a great local trail but not worth a long drive
