Description

Cann Wood Trails

Cann Wood is a large stretch of Forestry England woodland on the eastern edge of Plymouth, known locally as Plym Forest. Local riders have built a small network of informal downhill lines here, mixing jumps, berms and other technical features across trails for a range of ability levels. The trails are unwaymarked and volunteer-maintained, so download a route or use GPS navigation before you set off.

Cann Wood sits within 10 miles of Gawton Gravity Hub near Tavistock, so many Plymouth-based riders pair a visit here with a day at Gawton's more established uplift-served trails.

The Trails

  • Cann Wood's downhill lines are locally built and maintained by riders rather than a single operator or trail centre, so features, lines and conditions change from season to season depending on who's currently building.
  • Expect a mix of jumps, berms and other technical features aimed at different ability levels, though none of the trails carry official grading.
  • Ground conditions can turn heavy in winter, as with most unwaymarked woodland trails.

Local Organisation

  • There is no single club or trail association running Cann Wood. A community Facebook group, The Official Cann Woods Riders Page, is the main place local riders share conditions and builds, though its current level of activity is hard to confirm from outside the group.

Getting Here

  • By car: travelling north on the A38, take the exit signposted Plympton. At the first and second mini-roundabouts take the first exit, then follow the road past Boringdon Hall, Elfordleigh and the Woodside Animal Shelter. The Cann Wood entrance is on the left, off Forest View, PL7 5ED. A parking charge applies, payable via RingGo.
  • By bike: follow the Marsh Mills to Clearbrook Sustrans route and enter the Forestry England woods at Plymbridge. Cycling is not permitted on the Blue Walk.
  • Forestry England allows access to the woods 24 hours a day, year-round.
