Surrey hills consists of 3 great hills I can talk to that are pure mountain bike heavan. These are Leith Hill, Pitch Hill and Holmesbury Hill. Purpose built trails from the renowned Redlands Trail group and other trail builders have carved names into mtb myth such as Deliverance, Reservoir Dogs, Summer Lightning and so on.
Being the highest point in the North Downs you would expect it to be the best riding accessible to London and Home counties riders. The thing is you would not expect it to be quite as good as it is.
There are 10's of miles of singletrack in there multitude and the opportunity to mix and match and piece together trails is something else.
The trails are diverse you will find berms, drops, roots, switchbacks all in abundance. It has some sections which are really steep and others which are really steep and really gnarly. There is some wood dotted around (some quite hardcore) but looks mainly unofficial.
It's worth going with a local (there are a few here at iBikeRide) or hooking up with a local group. One of the recommended ones is the group that meet at Nirvana Cycles in Westcott. Word of warning dont be late as they dont wait.
Facilities are limited but two of the best stop of points are at The Tower the highest point on Leith Hill for tea and cake and in the valley in Peaslake. The newsagent for more tea and cake. Both are unmissable due the reasonably constant swarm of bikers around them.
London has some great mountain bike trail centres in it's back yard, aka the Home Counties
. Swinley, Chicksands, Epping, Aston Hill to name some of the best. In all my mountain bike rides so far this year the three or four at Surrey Hills have been some of if not the best.
