Front wheel alignment Posted at 2008/07/22 23:45 Karma: 8
Right!!

Living with Stumpy is a bit like living with a sick relative. You love them dearly but they are a bit high maintenance!

After a faulty rocker and bearings in the headset shot in the last few weeks (which have led me to really struggle in deciding who gets the most irritating bike squeek noise prize of the decade)' I am now noticing that my front wheel seems to recently have stopped moving in a straight line. It sort of has a tiny little bend in on each resolution.

Any ideas? don't really want to fork out for a new wheel. Does truing (or whatever it is called) help? Could it be I need a new headset (see below)

Also I cleaned and lubed my bearing last night in my head tube. The squeek has gone but it doesn't twist quite as smooth. It's a little stiff. I'm wondering if they are shot. Can you buy new bearings for a head tube? If so from where? Also the thing they were held in was so rusty and ugly looking. Can you replace that too?

I suspect my bike is a hypochondriac by the way.

I didn't think you were that noobish. hehe

3 things come to mind
-bent rim
-spokes are messed up:
*some might be bent
*they need truing
*the ones on one side are tighter than the ones on the other
-The bearings/bb are in poor conditions
*they have no remedy
*you need to get someone to fix them

First, check for any anomalies on the rim. These include a prety obvious damage signs; which may have ocurred by running your tyres with lower air pressure than necessary, and hitting a rock. If it is that, straighten it or get a new one.

Don't mess with the spokes if you don't know what you're doing. Take it to someone who knows.

I doubt it's the berings, as when they are problematic, they usually just spin poorly, not wobble.

One side of the spokes is much looser than the other. I'll get a tool and have a play. If I mess it up I'll take it into a shop then.

thanks
