When you manual, it is truly one of the most exhilarating feelings you can get on a mountain bike. Your front wheel is up and you are coasting along crouched over your saddle with the perfect balance point. SweetSmile

(contribution from Segio Rivas sergitobt from Santiago, Chile)

  wiggle

Step 1

For bike set up keep the saddle low

Step 2

Whilst at a cruising speed pull up on your handlebars and lean back, keeping your arms straight

Step 3

When you have pulled back and you feel like your going right back down you need to use your legs to push the bottom of your bike forward, equalizing your bikes balance.  Conversely if you feel the bike wheel going up to high then bring your knees in slightly and feather very gently the back brake. Alternating this motion can help keep momentum

Step 4

To change direction while manualing lean left or right with your hips to change direction of the bike.

Step 5

Keep everything in line. If you are using a BMX you want the down part of your handlebars in line with the forks.

Great sound track on this vid..

Can't do this stunt but my friend (in the SA DH team so good skills!) can do this on his Commencal Meta 5.5 (5 and a half inches travel) for probably over a minute. So travel doesn't make it impossible, but might be more difficult?

Aaah, you're looking for that all elusive secret to Manualing like a God aren't you ? I've been there and now, I love it.

The trick is this :

Keep your arms straight.
Put your bum over the back wheel.
Push back with your legs.

Having straight ARMS is the key. Bent arms and you'll never do it. When they are straight you find the balance point.

Also, do it when you're going down a hill (not TOO steep - and you need to be going quickly).

Finally - if you ride a single speed with vertical drop outs - adjust the back wheel so it's as close in to the _frame_ as possible. i.e. Make the read triangle as small as possible. This makes it easier to get the front wheel up.

I practice my manuals on a BMX, it's the easiest way.

Happy Manuals!

and this by Tomtomks
hey man!!! i got this by poppin a wheelie going down hill.. just at the point when the front wheel is going down, push your legs out straight and pull back so your arms go straight to, lean back,,(not to much) you will just feel how much when it happens!! if the front wheel starts to drop again just give a quick bend of the legs then push them straight again........i found if you get the wheelie....you get the manual.........man it feels good when you do happy days................ keep at it man
