ruts.jpg

Ruts are something you always will encounter in XC riding.  There was a few I came across whilst in the Alps - one of which caused a slight mishap!

Ruts will be of varying depths and usually caused by farm vehicles, land rovers or heavy use by cyclists.

Most people will 'hate ruts'.  They are very tricky to ride in as when you are in one all you want to do is get out which will usually make you fall off.

My technique for dealing with them is to focus on a point further along the trail than your front wheel (this is a good trail riding technique).  That way you take you mind off what you front wheel is doing and focus on where you are going.  Most people are quite capable of riding in a straight line but get spooked by ruts in similar way to  riding skinnies on timber sections.

Another tip is to keep your pedals as flat and parallel as you can and to ratchet (push pedal down but not all the way down and then up and repeat toavoid hitting the side of the rut and repeat)

My rut resulted in a pringled wheel...it will not happen again!
