Just had a week off with my daughter and some friends in the Cotswolds. All very chilled. I had left my bike behind as there was no space in the car and recently my car bike rack had come off in transit and bent bad:( ! So I had no biking in mind whatsoever and was happy thinking (or talking my myself happy) to just spending time walking and doing watersports on the lake with family and friends!
My friend who came to visit is an old friend from College and she has two great young boys who are are 6 and 9. As they turned up in the car I could not help but turn my attention to the three bikes on the back;) My mind turned instantly to the mums bike and thought well it may just have an inch of travel but it has two wheels and what else do you need (or lets be honest i meant "What else do I need!"). So devious thoughts of bike kidnapping, leaving their mum (for some nice piece and quiet of ocurse;) and me heading off with the kids in tow into the wilderness was born.
"No" I thought I'm just being childish lets all spend time together and put these devious plans away. As soon as their youngest got out the car I could hear... "Mum, Mum, can we go riding now",, "Mum, Please, you promised!. MUM!!!! and so on. Impulsively or maybe more instinctively (and to maybe just slightly disapproving glances from their mum;) I went that's a great idea there are loads of good trails for kids round here.. My scrapped plan of bike kidnap and my sudden growth into being a grown up, I guess, took about 6 seconds to stay scrapped!! Oh dear! but then hey, come on, we were going biking!!
10 mins later we were helmeted up and heading out. Mum had a women's Specialized Hybrid and was a very small frame. But I ride small bikes so it was cool. The kids were psyched and I took them round the lake. There is lots of muddy singletrack and it is quite overgrown. It is a fun ride.
We stopped at the car park which was perfectly empty. Hmmmh!! maybe we can have some fun here. For the next hour or could be more as we completely lost track of time..we practised bike set up, the attack position on the bike, proper braking, cornering, front wheel lifts, wheelies and hops. We also spent most of the time doing what is core to all kids education, development and growth into fully formed adults. We did skids. SKIDS, SKIDS and more SKIDS. Then we did more. SKIDDING like it had just been invented and it was our idea!;) Now I can pretend that skids are good for learning to turn at high speed! I could pretend they are great for balance and bike control. But (and I'm sure many of you think they are just bad trail discipline... but whatever!!) basically skids and skidding are just so much fun and clearly what all kids just want to do;).
Finally got back to offer my friend and guest a cup of tea and helped her unload the car. She commented on the fact it was light when we got here and dark now or words to that effect!! Never quite worked that one out. Anyways... The next few days were lovely walks and chilling out but really we were filling the time between the next shout from the youngest going "Can we go biking now" which we did lots;)
Kids learn so fast. They had great bike position were controlling stopping the bike at high speed, raising their front wheels, cornering smoothly and boy were they skidding like demons by the end of the break. Well that was my week off where the bike was put away to one side!. A week were I need to thank the bike god for supplying in what seemed was a desert of biking an surprise oasis of biking and also mainly for two new great biking buddies.
