Hi, I've been sitting on the couch lately and focused a bit more on my running, so my poor bike only got ridden once a week on the road...
So this weekend after watching a boring game of rugby on Saturday, I made a pact that come rain or sun, we would go out cycling Sunday in Tokai. After meeting first at my place for coffee and croissants, we loaded up our three bikes in the car and went for our favorite offroad spot: Tokai Forest. Despite the rain underway in the car, we persevered. Well, a lot more riders had the same thought and the parking area was very busy with cars. I guess more people wanted to get off the couch to get some riding in. Not having real rain gear for cycling, I went in my cycling pants with two shirts on, no rain jacket, no thermal gear. Well, the first kilometer in Tokai is always quite steep, so after huffing and puffing up that hill, I swear I lay off the red wine for a while, I soon cycled in only one shirt and the pants. Sort of halfway, we really got into it and starting to enjoy ourselves. We saw several riders covered in mud and with lots of thermal gear on. Sorry boys, it is because I'm so unfit, that I rode in a short shirt... The fun started really on the high contourpath on the way to Silvermine. Lots of little streams to cross and more than one large pool of water where you had to paddle halfway to get through it. We already looked like we banged into a brown bear, but it got worse once we started to hit the single tracks. It is amazing how much different the tracks felt, it was a whole new dimension to it, so we went quite slow over the single tracks and didn't do a few of the obstacles we normally would do. Result was that in the forest, I sidestepped into black mud, resulting to sink in it untill my knees. Mud definitely is an extra fun factor: we had a great time and the sun even showed itself for a moment. Tokai in winter is great! Now to get the kilometers in for my next race, which will be combined with a visit to a winefestival; how much more deadly can that be!
