Launch
of new Designs for Women Propero Helmet funds breast cancer
research. As
part of a global campaign to raise awareness and funds for people affected by
breast cancer, Specialized dealers worldwide will launch a special, limited
edition Design for Women Propero Helmet early April. In the UK, Specialized
Komen helmets sell for £79.99
and 10% of the retail sale will help benefit Breast Cancer Care.
Beyond this global initiative, Specialized in the UK will also contribute 10% of the retail sale in the UK to support Breast Cancer Care and will donate £7.99 on behalf of the first 250 female entrants to the 2008 Specialized Challenge Series due to start on April 13th, 2008. In October 2007, Time Magazine reported that “Breast cancer is the most lethal form of cancer for women in the world. An estimated one million cases will be identified this year, and about 500,000 new and existing patients will die from the disease.”
But according to the American Cancer Association, death rates due to breast cancer are on the decline, most likely as a result of early detection through enhanced screening, heightened awareness and improved treatment.
The Designs for Women brand is not only committed to fostering women in cycling, but understanding and spreading awareness about the issues that affect women’s daily lives.
Please join Specialized and D4W in the fight against breast cancer; your donations can make a huge difference.
Breast Cancer Care is the UK’s leading provider of information, practical assistance and emotional support for anyone affected by breast Cancer.
Every year they give direct support to over 22,000 people with breast cancer or breast health concerns through their helpline (0808 800 600), peer support and direct services.

... I hate it when manufacturers use a good cause as a marketing tool Yes, breast cancer happens way too often and as a woman I am in favor off all the research, but am not going to buy a product because part of the price I pay will go to this fund. Rather donate to them directly. |

... Nicky I respect your views and direct donations will cost far less in terms of administration costs and so realise far more value to sufferers and their families. Some information to put into the mix. I checked Breast Cancer Care's published accounts. In 2006 1.3 million was raised through merchandising income which is what I guess this type of thing is. In 2007 3.7 million was raised through corporate sponsorships and 3.4 million through corporate donations. Only 2.8 million came through voluntary donations. I don't know or make comment on if there is a good or bad way to give but I do know that the reality is that without companies supporting charities like Breast Cancer Care they would not be able to help as much as they do. Interestingly 3.5 million was raised through events and I will write to my contact at Specialized to see if they are looking at putting some sponsorship behind events for this cause as well as do they directly give or plan to give in the form of corporate donations. |

... Thanks! Breast Cancer hits a special spot in my heart; have so many friends who have had this and luckily survived. Well, if they donate me a Stumpjumper, I'm quite willing to paint it pink and wear pink ribbons on my helmet... |
