CHICKSANDS!! this place is awesome.. it has all ya want for a fun day out. shore, dual slalom, 4x course, dirt jump, bomb holes, DH runs and a xc run too.
i started with the shore (the small stuff) must have spent 2 hours here, and did finally get round one part with a see-saw on it (well chuffed) the shore here is first class, from low to high, wide to skinny, top place for ya slow and balancing skills. going to try some of the big stuff next time for sure.
next tried my hand at dropin off some of the kickers into the bomb holes WOW!! wat a rush, didn`t do to many of em tho my balls not that big:_b_link__: did try some of the DH runs even tho they are a bit short, but still good fun, a good 2 hours spent here.
with the arrival of stumpy-dan we made our way over to the dual slalom and 4x, how much fun can two (30 something) blokes have in one day this by far was the best part of my day. dont know how many runs we did but how cool to blast down a hill side by side on a course that is so well made, am hoping that next time there will be a bit more elbowing going on dan!!
so if like me you love the trails in wales or long xc days out putting the miles in, on that one weekend when you fancy something with just a bit of fun go to chicksands..

thanks to dan for letting me flirt with his big hit, and letting me hav a go (think she liked me)

I took last week a bit of a holiday and drove to the Richtersveld, approx 900 km from Cape Town, a nature reserve close to the border with Namibia. You're only allowed to do the jeep tracks there, but the whole nature reserve is basically 4x4 trails, so you don't want to try the hiking trails with your bike... They are however working on a specific dedicated mtb trail.

There's a lot of sandy paths and you can only cycle early in the mornings or late afternoons, otherwise it is too hot. We did a nice trip of approx 25km's and had the luxury of being dropped off by the car on top of the mountain first. We tried the first day to climb it ourselves, but believed it after 6 km battling uphill in the sand. Believe me, in the sand you want to keep your momentum and speed! Had only minor falls due to bravery and bunny hops in the sand, which are quite tricky if you're still a beginner. In short, we only did a small part of the Richtersveld, but we'll surely be back, since we only had to keep an eye out for the baboons, goats and the occasional scorpion.

Glentress well that was not this weekend but the last. Anyway it was awesome!
We did Spooky Woods (great trail) twice, Ewok Village (north shore), Pennels Vennel (red route), Magic Mushroom (reb/black) and a few others on the way back down. It was the first time I'd done the majority of the trials and it was just sooo fun! If anyone here has been to Glentress they'll know how great it is (e.g.Stumpy Dan ).
I recommend Spooky Woods if anyone is planning to go up to Glentress any time soon.
