clicking or creaking?
bottom brackets tend to creak - can check easily if you put pedals a 3 & 9 o'clock and twist towards centre line of frame - any play? time to replace.
clicking could be loose chain ring bolts that give a little under pressure eg climbing.
any slipping of chain when pedalling? Pauls might not be engaging in free hub.

If it's something wearing out then sticking the bike on a stand and turning everything should still get faint sounds or feel through your hands.

As going up hill is when most force is transmitted through the mechanical parts it sounds like something somewhere needs tightening up !
